# mise.toml reference

Every key mise reads from a mise.toml, generated from https://mise.jdx.dev/schema/mise.json,
with a file for each top-level section. Names in angle brackets, such as `tasks.<name>`, stand for a key you choose,
and `<list>[].<key>` is a key of each table in a list. The same reference as a
page you can filter and browse: https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference.html

- [`_`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/_.md)
- [`alias`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/alias.md): custom shorthands; same keys as `tool_alias`
- [`bootstrap`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/bootstrap.md): machine-global bootstrapping (system packages, repos, macOS defaults, launchd agents, login shell) (364 keys)
- [`daemon_groups`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/daemon_groups.md): Experimental named groups of project daemons. Members are daemon names or other group names declared in the same project. (2 keys)
- [`daemon_providers`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/daemon_providers.md): Experimental shared servers owned by the user. Only allowed in global configuration. (12 keys)
- [`daemons`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/daemons.md): Experimental project daemons: custom pitchfork commands or managed presets. (23 keys)
- [`daemons_settings`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/daemons_settings.md): Experimental project-wide daemon options. (2 keys)
- [`deps`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/deps.md): configure deps providers (27 keys)
- [`doctor`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/doctor.md): Project diagnostic checks, run explicitly with mise doctor project. (9 keys)
- [`dotenv`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/dotenv.md): dotenv file(s) to load. Deprecated; use env._.file instead. This will be removed in mise 2027.4.0.
- [`dotfile_groups`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/dotfile_groups.md): named directory trees of dotfiles, applied with `mise dotfiles apply` or `mise bootstrap` while [bootstrap] dotfile_groups selects them (or is unset) (10 keys)
- [`dotfiles`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/dotfiles.md): dotfiles applied with `mise dotfiles apply` or `mise bootstrap`, keyed by target path or a logical name when every variant overrides the target; an omitted source for the latter resolves the relative key under dotfiles.root (27 keys)
- [`env`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/env.md): environment variables to set (33 keys)
- [`env_file`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/env_file.md): dotenv file(s) to load. Deprecated; use env._.file instead. This will be removed in mise 2027.4.0.

- [`hooks`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/hooks.md): hooks to run on events like cd, enter, leave (17 keys)
- [`include`](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/reference/include.md): config files merged into this one, ranking just below it: a local path (relative to this file), git::<url>//<path>.toml?ref=<ref> or oci::<registry>/<repo>[:tag|@sha256:<digest>] (the artifact holds a mise.toml). Paranoid mode requires a commit sha or digest for remote includes and rejects local ones; otherwise a branch or tag is refreshed after fetch_remote_versions_cache
